At first glance, this villa perched on top of a Cretan cliff is an architectural marvel, but the most impressive aspects lie beyond its appearance. The architects behind the project used ecologically sensitive practices during construction, from natural paints and installing energy-efficient fittings to choosing sustainably sourced stone. This should give you a sense of quiet satisfaction while you wind back and relax here, which is remarkably easy to do. The infinity pool has glorious views of Mirabello Bay, as well as cascading waterfalls and a Jacuzzi. After a dip, there are numerous terraces on which to take a breather, including a pergola with a barbecue underneath if you're feeling a little peckish. In this corner of western Crete, you're not only spoiled for beaches, but history abounds in this area — the nearby island of Spinalonga can be reached by boat from Elounda and has an impressive fortress from its time under Venetian occupation.
